Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky
Has anyone seen it? Any reviews? I am curious to hear about Mary Faber...

Posted: 12/1/06 at 2:28amI saw it earlier this week- I wasn't a big fan of the show itself, but I did honestly walk out of it going "OMG I so did not know that Mary Faber had that *voice* in her!" (I'd only ever seen her in Avenue Q, which does no justice to what I learned she is capable of singing.)

When I saw the show I thought the best part was Mary Faber. The writing isn't so great and the songs didn't really work with the show in many parts. Also the second act doesn't seem like part of the same show as the first (same characters, but totally different feel). The band is onstage the whole time which is a nice touch, I think, and the lighting and set are pretty neat.
I agree with Anakela that I was totally surprised by the singing (and acting) ability of Mary Faber. I think the puppets are just holding her back.

Posted: 12/1/06 at 12:13pmHey Lucia- did you see it when it had an intermission? I don't know when the change happened, our Playbills had the intermission listed but then there were inserts saying "...performed without an intermission" when we went this week. And I think it worked better without an intermission- I still didn't like Act II (Floyd totally is the more flushed out role than Clea in my opinion) but I think it would've been even that much harder to get into Act II if jumping back into things after an intermission.

Anakela - I saw it the first weekend and there was a 15 minute intermission before act 2. I'm glad to see that they cut it, though, because act 2 started and I thought I was at a different play.
I agree that Floyd is more fleshed out than Clea, I felt cheated somewhat that Floyd's problems get the whole (rather long) first act and then Clea's problems get a montage and one scene. I would have loved more of a balance.

I saw it last weekend, and I really, really enjoyed it. I agree that it had its problems (the first act dragged quite a bit!), and there definitely wasn't enough of a balance between Floyd and Clea's stories, but I thought that the thoughts behind everything were really touching and powerful...how these two people could come together after everything that had happened, all of those changes, and still affect each other and change each other in such a positive way. I really, really loved their friendship.
And I agree wholeheartedly about walking out of there blown away by Mary. This was the third show I'd seen her in (Slut and Q being the first two), and I'd NEVER imagined that she would be able to do what she does in Floyd and Clea. And the end of "Would You Give a Damn?", the guy next to me went "Holy ****," and I had to agree, because she was just PHENOMENAL.
There are a couple of video clips from the show up on the www.playwrighthorizons.org website for anyone who's curious!

Posted: 12/2/06 at 5:10pmThanks for the heads up about the video fishergirl. Just from those snippets I can see that they've made a few changes to things that I thought really didn't work when I saw it. Perhaps I'll have to catch it again after it opens and revise my opinion.
