Posted: 5/20/04 at 5:07pmUmm, who cares if and how the damn car flies in Chitty? That car isn't a person in the air singing, now is it? If the end of "Defying Gravity" was prerecorded and played instead of Idina actually singing, then they maybe could have had a more flashy flying sequence. But if she were to lipsynch in the event that they would have taken that route, can you imagine all the slack that girl would get?

Flying and singing was accomplished quite well in Peter Pan and Witches of Eastwick, so it is possible and I think it would have been more dramatic and effective, but with the set design, is probably impossible to do.
The effect in Wicked is nearly identical to one used in the original Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar just before the crucifiction. Jesus was wearing the crown of thorns and surrounded by a golden cape that completely covered him as he rose and stretched out in exactly the same way as Elphaba's black dress.
