Even in the wake of the Spider-Man debacle, theatergoers will expect flying actors in shows like Aladdin and Peter Pan. Is the technology for flying new? Is it particularly expensive?

There are technologies for flying that go back to the earliest theater, as there are newer technologies that require complex computer programming. You can tie a rope around an actor and hoist them using pulleys that can be found in hardware stores, and/or you can design and realize systems that allow multiple actors to fly simultaneously while criss crossing each other's support cables.

Then, there's safety, insurance and union compensation issues.

The sort of technology utilized in Spider-Man is relatively new (new being a relative term), and is based on the same ideas as those employed for the cameras used in sporting events. It has been around for quite a while but the marriage of the hardware and the software has really made it viable only within the last decade. While it is possible to step back from the technology, just as is the case with lighting, things never really flow that way.

The basic concept is not new or expensive, though there are cutting-edge techniques that are both at the highest-end.

What's most important is not to make any mistakes.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
