#0Follies OBCR: CD vs. LP
Posted: 8/15/05 at 9:51pmI just have a quick question. I've searched and read every thread I could find on the Follies Cast Recordings, and from what I've gathered, as a first-time "Follies" listener, I should buy the OBCR first. I also read quite a few times that the original LP recording of the OBC had to be sliced apart to fit on a disk. So my question is, to those of you who have or have had both the LP and the CD of the OBCR, does the LP have any material that the CD doesnt that makes it more worth buying? I have a great brand new record player and software that records LPs and illiminates cracks & pops and well as macinery-hum, and I looked on eBay and various used sources and found that I can get it for almost nothing, so should I buy the LP or the CD of the OBC? (...Keeping in mind that I'm more interested in getting the most material over sound quality and convenience.) Updated On: 8/15/05 at 09:51 PM

Posted: 8/15/05 at 9:55pmThe LP has lousy sound, and is missing "One More Kiss," which the CD has.

CDs hold more music than LPs. The score was sliced to fit on the LP. The CD includes "One More Kiss," which was not on the original LP.
EDITED: Everyone beat me to it.

I think the person may have confused it with the 2 LP Concert version or maybe the London cast which was on 2 LPs and later on 2 CD's but was reissued as a single CD 9by leaving out one very minor track that is mostly dialugue and underscoring and is not a real song, called "Social Dancing.")
The rumors that Capitol had taped the whole score were laid to rest in Ted Chapin's book. Even the abridged songs like "I'm Still Here" were not recorded in any longer form. And "One More Kiss" was a song that Dick Jones wanted left off the album and recorded it saying he would only use it if there was room and then made sure it wasn't on the Lp.
IF you do get the LP make sure it has the insert which contains a really excellent synopsis of the show that was not reprinted in the booklets in either CD edition.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
