Follies in Concert DVD

Is this the whole show (songs and dialogue) with no set, or is it just the songs being performed?

re: Follies in Concert DVD

It's just the songs performed in concert, but it's actually not the concert straight though, it's a documentary of the concert with many of the musical numbers at the end. There is a cd of the entire show.

Actually, it seemed like there was more backstage/rehearsal footage than actual concert footage.

And on the dvd all the songs are not performed in their entirety

But it's a must for any Sondheim/Follies fan. And people who enjoy musical theatre and the whole creative process.

After I saw the butcher job (editing) they did on "I'm Still Here", I stopped watching it & have not picked it up since

Yes the editing on "I'm Still Here" is unfortunate. I remember a lot of people being disappointed because the dvd was thought to contain the concert in it's entirety. It was recorded and I can't imagine why it has never been released.(The entire concert)

I love this video...Elaine Stritch is PRICELESS :0)

I don't really watch it to see the concert, but to watch all the other stuff going on.

Orpheum - you're treading on thin ice, missy - it is one of Sondheim's most brilliant pieces of theatre. Don't judge it by that concert video, which only captures moments in the show and doesn't contain the difinitive interpretations of the songs. The show itself is brilliant and if you want to know more about it, read "Everything Was Possible" by Ted Chapin - he was around for the entire rehearsal period of the original production and has wonderful stories to tell about the process.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Orph I didn't understand your post. You think Follies is Sondheim's worst show?

re: Follies in Concert DVD

I was hoping that the DVD would have included bonus footage, but alas it didn't. My favorite "bad editing" moment is during "Beautiful Girls." We see Elaine Strich and Barbara Cook backstage seconds before the are about to go on... the cut to their entrances and they are wearing different dresses!!!

Still, I can still remember seeing it on PBS when I was very young and being stunned its depth of inteligence and profound emotion. Before encountering "Follies" I never realized how something like a musical could be so rich, and examine complex adult feelings and experience.

In many ways the Documentary changed my life. It was the moment I learned the difference between Art and Entertainment. I love it. And Follies is my Favorite Musical. To this day it still makes me cry when I see it.
