Because I'm bored, I'm opening this up for discussion. In your mind, what musical is generally good on stage, but when it hit the big screen, turned plain sour? Likewise, what musical (or play for that matter) was good on stage, and the movie measured up? My picks:
Good Stage Show/Bad Movie: GODSPELL. Works greaton stage (if done well), but watching that movie is just too bizarre for words. Makes me wonder what they actors are "on" in all honesty. The material just doesn't translate well to a screen at all.
Good Stage Show/Equally Good movie: WEST SIDE STORY. Even the few changes they made worked well for me.

Good show bad movie:
Les Miserables
Good show good movie:
Chicago
Not to start anything, but the movie of Les Miserables isn't based on the show version...its based on the book. Two entirely different productions....maybe its just me being picky.
Good show/bad movie
Phantom of the Opera
Hair (I just don't like it...)
Good show/good movie
Funny Girl
Chicago
West Side Story (totally agree)
Good show/bad movie: Cabaret
Good show/good movie: The Sound of Music
Good show/bad movie : The Wiz & A Chorus Line
Good show/good movie: Chicago & Amadeus
Good Show/Bad Movie: My Fair Lady, A Chorus Line
Good Show/Good Movie: West Side Story, The Miracle Worker
Good show/bad movie: Phantom (it makes me sad to think)
Good Movie/Good Show: Disney's Lion king and Disney's Hunchback (the german staging was almost better than the movie)
how about bad show/ good movie, lol, : Chicago
