Redhot is certainly entitled to her opinion but the fact is I've worked with too many actors who have been wrecked by bad "advice" and have lost all confidence, spontaneity and joy in performance due to the destructive and negative prohibitions/"rules" laid down by acting teachers and schools.
To call AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME strictly a number about co-dependency shows the true lack of imagination. For example, the number easily lends itself to a circumstance where a woman, married to a man accused of a crime, decides to stand by her man, despite the advice of well-meaning friends. Why? Because she believes he's innocent. Hardly co-dependent behavior but rather a high-stakes situation. I would hope my partner would choose to do the same for me if I ever found myself in such a situation, wouldn't you?
As long as he needs me
I know where I must be
I'll cling on steadfastly
As long as he needs me.
AS long as life is long
I'll love him right or wrong
And somehow I'll be strong
As long as he needs me
If you are lonely,
Then you will know
When someone needs you
You love them so.
I won't betray his trust
Though people say I must
I've got to stay true just
As long as he needs me.

Here's the thing. Roxie asked for people's opinions. Redhot gave his. If someone else felt differently, they could have simply stated how they felt without attacking the person ahead of them. Then the next person could have posted their own ideas, and so on, instead of this becoming a thread about attacks. It was supposed to be a thread about Roxie's audition.
That is all.

Reread my post, rathnait. My comments all concerned themselves with the acting teacher's comments and weren't directed at Redhot at all. But apparently I touched a nerve.

I love YOU leomaxfrank!
And I read it, MusicMan. You used words that were completely unnecessary. Just give your opinion without namecalling. It wasn't directed at redhot, but at his teacher. Of course he took that personally.

I actually think the MAJOR problem with people singing songs from OLIVER! is the lack of imagination. People are used to seeing them portrayed in a very shallow way so no-one ever thinks of LOOKING AT THE LYRICS!!!!
I have yet to see anyone sing REVIEWING THE SITUATION and produce the underlying pathos that is especially to be found in the last verse - everyone I've seen plays it purely for laughs. IT IS NOT A FUNNY SONG, PEOPLE!!!! Are YOU laughing during "Don't want nobody hurt for me or made to do the dirt for me?" Fagin is really suffering there!!!
...breathes...sorry - it just REALLY annoys me.
All the big numbers from OLIVER! have far more depth than people give them credit for.
AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME actually shows a very strong woman. Think about Nancy in the context of the show - she's no walkover. She loves Bill, but she stands up to him. She's got her eyes open "Who else would love him still when they've been used so ill?" - she knows he treats her badly but she also knows she doesn't either need or deserve it. She loves him - she doesn't NEED him - there's a difference. The song is more reflective than despairing and a little close analysis of the lyrics rather than taking previous interpretations for granted could produce quite surprising and new results. For example, it could be played as very determined - a woman who knows most people would say what she is doing is stupid, but who knows that it's the right thing for her.
I don't believe any song has only one interpretation, especially not one as shallow as "it's all about co-dependency". Look deeper. See the clues that point you in so many different directions, that suggest so many conflicting emotions. Find the reasons behind those emotions and there will always be a new way to perform the song.

Wow - I leave the board for a couple hours and this thread takes off in some interesting directions!
Thanks to all of you who backed me up. - I was just stating an opinion that I feel pretty strongly about - SING HAPPY (as LizawithaZ would say) - I believe that strong character shows through in anything you do - so why not entertain the casting people *unless they SPECIFICALLY ask for dark and brooding material*- with upbeat, joyful songs that celebrate life and living it. Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
PS =joyful songs can be ballads to, just find the joy in the lyric, no matter what you are singing about. find the HOPE.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 7:32pmOnce again, Rathnait, your viewpoint is poorly argued as I called no one names but expressed my opinion about the comments relayed by Redhot. I completely agree with inthemoney as they reiterate the same sentiments I wrote above. Updated On: 9/16/04 at 07:32 PM

"Your acting teacher's comment is a perfect example of the kind of nonsense that gets promulgated amongst actors.. To call the character a 'schmuck' is simplistic, arguable and irrelevant."
Hmmm. He's not only promulgating nonsense, but he's simplistic and irrelevant. I'd say that is some name-calling - or something very close to it - right there. None of that was necessary in order to make your point.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 9:47pmWow guys, I posted this last night and this is the first chance I've had to check back. Thanks for all your feedback and your little tift was quite amusing. I wasn't offended my anyone's remarks...no worries. About that piece, I wasn't all that set on it because I am a really flashy, happy person but it's one I have in my repertoire and am comfortable with. I would love to do another piece but am stuck on time etc. I came across Gimme Gimme on Sheet music direct...just a question...is this a no no? Please don't yell hehe
