What was Ethel doing at the typewriter?
If you look to the right, there is also a fascinating interview of Ethel Merman done by Mary Martin and Jim Hartz.
Jim Hartz: Is there anything you would change or do differently?
Ethel (without missing a beat): Yeah, a couple of husbands.
At the end, Mary and Ethel sing a version of "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better."

Posted: 6/19/08 at 5:49pmBefore she got her break in show business Ethel was a secretary with excellent shorthand and typing skills. She put them to good use in rehearsals taking down changes in shorthand and typing up copies for everyone. In all her years she did all her own correspondence and never hired a secretary.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The YOUTUBE sequence of pictures with the overture in the background is great! There are photographs of the wonderful, garish "Minsky's Salute to Christmas", dropped in subsequent productions in favor of the less expensive and, IMO, less funny "Minsky's Salute to the Garden of Eden". The latter uses fewer showgirls and is thus less expensive. The original production had 15 showgirls in that scene, most of whom were unused in the rest of the show. The original spared no expense.
I have some of the photographs seen in the YOUTUBE sequence and also have a numbered engraving of the Hirschfeld drawing of the GYPSY principals. I treasure them.

That Tyne commercial is hilariously awful.
Call 2. 1. 2. 4. 6. 0. 1.

"What was Ethel doing at the typewriter"
If Mary Martin's husband could win a shorthand contest anywhere Ethel could win a typing contest anywhere. Ethel would always type up the changes and re-arranges they made in the shows and especially in Gypsy and Call Me Madam. She lived at her typewriter, or possibly she was answering mail. She never hand-wrote a letter, it was always typed up so she could make a copy and put it in her scrapbooks. I should now I used to spend hours talking to her when she used to answer her mail and type up the copies and she would make me put them in her books or I'd stamp them and send them out for her.

Nice history on the show. I think the girl who played Louise with Merman looked a bit like Laura. And Lupone echoes Merman a bit as well (notice I said "a bit").
