Enjolras I agree with lots of your points--I don't mind anachronistic scores for period pieces but with WIldhorn it might be more interesting if he at least tried to get stagings of those scores/shows then that did somethign abstract--instead he goes for very period looking sets and costumes for the most part which makes it stand out even more.
However I have to say I am one who firmly finds him a sub par ALW (who I genuinely usually really like)
As much as I like Wildhorn, I crinbe whenever I hear "Murder, Murder" or as we call it "Moider, Moider"
