I was on IBDB looking at Award facts because I was kinda bored. Well, I came upon Fred Ebb's name and as I was scrolling down at the list of my favorite lyricist's many awards, I noticed that he had been ignored by the Drama Desk Awards for every show he wrote. John Kander was nominated for every show he wrote, at least durring the Drama Desks' time.
I was shocked. I noticed that some of the worst lyrics of all time (Caroline or Change- Tony Kushner, The Lion King- Tim Rice and all of the other random people, etc.) had been nominated, but not Fred Ebb?
Does anyone agree with this rather trival opinion of mine? I really feel that was wrong, to snub such a talented and legendary man!
I don't know what the reason was, but I agree, he was one of our greatest lyricists.

1) Personally, I think Kushner's libretto for Caroline is brilliant.
2) According to Playbill's Awards Database, Fred Ebb won the Drama Desk for Best Lyrics for Zorba in 1969. Prior to that year, the Drama Desks only recognized Off-Broadway productions, so Flora the Red Menace, Cabaret and The Happy Time were not eligible. Chicago lost lyrics to A Chorus Line. No lyrics award was given the year of Woman of the Year. Sondheim's lyrics for Sunday in the Park with George beat out Ebb's lyrics for The Rink. Gerard Alessandrini won for lyrics the year of Steel Pier.
Thanks, Margopedia!
All the greats seem to be unappreciated in their time. Oh well, it's a cruel cycle.
Margo-
I hope you weren't offended. I really didn't care for the show, with the exception of Lots Wife.
I didn't know Zorba won a Drama Desk. I guess I should re-check my sources before posting.
However-
That's what bugged me. I was on a website called Lost-Mind and they put that he was only nominated for The Rink. I guess the awards weren't as well covered until recent times.
