Hi guys, I was thinking of auditioning for the role of Fredric in 'The Pirates of Penzance' (Broadway version). And was wondering what is the vocal range of the part? I know that he is a tenor, but wanted to know how high he sings? Thank you in advance.

I think B flat is the highest, but there is an optional G or G flat instead. This is just off the top of my head.

Out of interest, what makes the Broadway version different from whatever other versions there are? ^_^

I believe one is operatic and the one for Broadway is more forgiving?

I think a big part of the difference is in the orchestrations, and there are additional songs for the broadway version taken from other G & S Shows...I think :O)

The papp version omits the overture and adds Sorry her Lot from HMS pinafore and My Eyes are Fully open from Ruddigore.

and the orchestrations are reduced.

Fredericks b-flat is the one that gets recorded, the G just isn't as impressive. Although Rex smith sings it Falsetto on the recording/

Be warned there are a lot of wrong notes and flat notes as well as bad rhythms in the Papp recording. Even if youre determined to sing it like that (and I hope you decide not to) you should listen to a well made recording to get all the pitches and rhythms correct, or just read the score of course.

If you speak of the B flat in "Maiden Breast", Smith certainly does not falsetto that note.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.
