Stage and Screen Online has just posted a 13 minute exclusive interview with Stephen Sondheim, discussing the movie version of Sweeney Todd. In conversation with British journalist Edward Seckerson, Sondheim explains how the movie came about, the extent of his involvement, how he usually doesn't like the big-screen versions of his musicals, and how Tim Burton is different : "Burton has a talent for overstatement and that's exactly what's required for a story as bizarre as Sweeney Todd".

Great interview, thanks. Too bad it cuts out before their done.

This should clear up some of the qualms about the cuts made for the movie.

The interview stops where it does because that was, essentially, the most natural end of the recording. I promise you didn't miss anything!
