Free Standing Door
Hey Guys.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience building Free Standing Doors.
We need some for a show and we are having some trouble starting. We don't know what kind of wood to use that won't be to heavy on the Casters and that will hold and we're not sure how to give it support.
Blueprints, examples and anything pointing us in the right direction would be fantastic.
Thanks.

Get a pre-hung, hollow-core door (you can probably find one at your local Home Depot for pretty cheap). Finish the outside with 1/8" plywood, then attach triangular pieces to the sides -- 12" across, 12-18" high. This'll keep it stable.
Are you moving it around? Is so, put it on an 18" deep by 36" wide platform 3-4" high. Use 3" casters.

Thanks so much. I'm going to do that. I'll be sure to credit you.

Heck, put me down as set designer. I need a credit for the resume. :0

It is going to move. If you want to send me a Bio at Projectxthemusical@Gmail.com I'd gladly add it.

HOw/What do you mean by Finsih it. Like nail it? And how should we go about hinging it?
A prehung door is already on hinges, attached to a frame that's open on the outside. You'd finish it by covering that. The only hardware you'll need to add is something for the doorknob, but ask the salesperson for something like magnetic locks instead of a traditional turn-and-pull.

If you don't want to use casters, you could use "magic sliders". I was just in a production of Tommy with a couple of freestanding doors and we use the sliders. It worked pretty well.

When did this site become the "I don't know the basics of theatre so can you help me for free?" place to go to?
