The casting for Godspell is extremly loose. The "characters" are the actors names. In the script and most descriptions the names used are the first names of the original actors with the exception of Jesus and I think one other. Almost any character can sing any other song and most songs aren't gender specific. The script consists of serveral little pantomimes or skits of various bible stories from "the gospel according to St. Matthew". Good luck! Updated On: 2/17/05 at 05:35 PM

I've never seen Godspell, but I have the off-broadway recording. Jesus is the lead in the show but it sounds like it's more of an ensemble piece. I think it's about Jesus and his disciples and at the end Jesus is crucified. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more helpful. I hope you get it! God, I hope you get it! Have fun, it's good music.

There really are no leads in Godspell...and in playbills from the original production, the words "All parts in Godspell are interchangable," are used. One character is identified as a Jesus-like character while another is labeled as the John the Baptist/Judas characters.....the others all fall into place somewhat like this...
Sonia....very Mae West in style...sings "Turn Back O Man"
Robin....sweet, dedicated to Jesus, sings "Day By Day" (the most well known song from the show)
Llamar-father type...sings "All Good Gifts"
Jeffrey-a bit silly, physical comedian, sings "Oh Bless the Lord"
Gilmer-dresses like a washer-woman..sings "Learn Your Lessons Well"
Joanne-lots of energy..sings "Oh Bless the Lord"
Herb-a bit nondescript on recordings, is funny, but has no solo
Peggy-mother type, sings the very beautiful "By My Side"

Hope that helps. BTW..these character descriptions are based on the orig. NY cast from the Cherry Lane Theatre.

Its not the typical "Jesus" story. Many people set in in the present day, which i believe makes it more effective. I love this show. I think when it is done right, it is one of the most powerful shows. The movie does help a lot

I saw GODSP-HELL once... the show was set in an airport and sucked...

And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...
