Just curious--
Does your quote (can't tell if that's your signature quote or not) imply that you thing SEUSSICAL is horrible, b/c, if so, I'll just have to disagree. I admit I'm biased, but I think that score is really clever and got short-shrifted.

I agree, some of the songs are a little iffy though. 'Don't waste the moon' and 'it hurts to be strong' strike me right now... OH WAIT and the horrid song that is 'Carrie,' the first incarnation. "Doesn't anybody ever get it right, carrie."
I'm all for a revival done right, without latex body suits and 30 year old teenagers wearing bondage gear

Posted: 12/18/03 at 9:41pmDon't you mean silver latex body suits with epaulets and ankle boots? Who in the world thought that was a good idea? And those skimpy toga gym uniforms! Like any American school issued those in the 80s.

"When I Get My Name In Lights" from "Legs Diamond" also currently being heard in "The Boy From Oz."
The one bright moment from an otherwise forgettable score.

I hated STARLIGHT EXPRESS but thought that the song "There's Me" was quite beautiful. Also, there is a totally stunning song called "Alone" in the famous West End flop show FIELDS OF AMBROSIA.
And, regarding some things I've read in other posts in this thread:
I also love "Love Look Away" from FLOWER DRUM SONG but I think the score is full of other really good songs.
AS for THE YEARLING, I never saw the show, of course, but in addition to the excellent "Why Did I Choose You" there is a delicious number called "One Promise Come True".

Posted: 12/19/03 at 6:05pmStill waiting for someone to take a hold of Fields of Ambrosia and do it right in America. It's dark, tricky material that was done in by a terrible production in London. (London was probably the wrong choice for such a Southern gothic piece). Still, the score is often terrific, and in addition to "Alone," it also features a number of great items, including the startling title song, the rousing "Nuthin'," "Step Right Up" and "All In This Together," a wistful waltz, "Too Bad," and a lovely duet, "Continetal Sunday". The show was forever maligned due to its West End failure, but there's a good show in there, waiting to be discovered. I recommend the cast recording highly.

Matt ~ I didn't say Roméo et Juliette. I said Romeo & Juliet ~ the Musical. The music, the costumes, and just about everything else was changed so it would live up to how a West End show "should" be. The music sounded like it was composed on one of those Effect keyboards that have the funky sounds...or sounded like karaoke music, if you will. I understand that they wanted to change the music so it could be played by an orchestra, but they went WAY too far. And you think the French costumes were bad, look at the British. They were using clothing from all centuries.
If you'd go to my website and check out the British section, you'd see how different the shows were. (I also have some clips from the CD)
The only song I think actually does the show justice is "Empty Sky" which is the song Friar Lawrence sings after Romeo and Juliet kill themselves.
