I would say I hope that Gypsy closes soon. But my grudge is against Bernadette, not the show. I know Anna in the Tropics has been struggling, though I hate to admit it. I don't know if it's already scheduled to close yet, but I think Movin Out will be next.

January is a slow month everywhere in NYC and the recent weather hasn't helped matters. Most of the large convention hotels are below 50% occupancy. Convention biz picks up in February. When that happens theatre biz picks up. See the correlation. Shows like GYPSY, 42nd Street, Rent and others depend on convention and tourist business at this point in their runs. They will most likely be open at least through the summer tourist season. Bernadette Peters has box-office draw which is why even in the cold month of January it does good weekend business with tourists who come in Friday-Sunday. And the thing about Broadway, a show can lose a hundred thousand dollars one week and then be up two hundred thousand the next week.

Just curious, anyone have any idea what they negotiate with the star of a show when they extend their contract? And do contracts get extended more than once during the duration of the show?

Elphie, I don't know, but Mamma Mia! strikes me as the type of show that will almost always do well, even during the generally slow winter season. It seems like it's sold out pretty often, probably because it's a show that's appealing to almost anybody. I also that because of that, it will run for a pretty long time.

Gypsy will not close until Sept. or even until 2005. Like said before this show will do well in times when there are more tourists. After Bernadettes contract, which could be in Sept. They need to get someone like Bette Midler as Rose if they want to go on after Peters. Whats ur Grudge with Peters State of Jade?
