Posted: 11/26/03 at 1:51pmI would see TAKE ME OUT. IT's more entertaining, and you can always just buy the cast recording of GYPSY and save the 80 or 90 dollars.

See "Take Me Out" since it's closing. Otherwise, you might not get a chance, and you'll always wonder "what if?"
Gypsy is all right. But it's gonna be around a bit longer.

Posted: 11/26/03 at 2:26pmDo you live in NY? If so, I'd say go for TAKE ME OUT. If not, go for GYPSY. TAKE ME OUT will be done a lot around the country next year and in productions comparable to the Broadway version. GYPSY will be done a lot next year too but you won't see Bernadette Peters anywhere but on Broadway. She is the reason for this revival.

I doubt that they will be doing TAKE ME OUT around the country. I suppose it's possible, but the logistics of some of the scenes may prove prohibitive. There's also the question of the nudity.
As for GYPSY, I've seen it, and it was okay. I much prefer the cast recording. I have nothing against GYPSY. I'm seeing it again NEw YEars week, but I'd much rather see TAKE ME OUT. It's an all around more satisyfing production.
IF you only have one night to see something, I say go with TAKE ME OUT. It'll be closing soon and GYPSY should be playing for months to come. Besides, seeing Daniel Sunjata and Maximillian Alexander nude will warm you up. You won't find a more inspiring sight. As an added bonus, they throw in Denis O'Hare at no extra cost.

Posted: 11/26/03 at 4:16pmLOVE VALOUR COMPASSION gets done a lot around the country complete with nude scenes. I would think as another Tony winning best play, TAKE ME OUT would get done frequently as well. Also I think in limited runs, the baseball theme is a selling point. Whether you love or hate GYPSY with Bernadette it is a different take on the material that you're not likely to see at an amatuer or regional theater anytime soon. I quite enjoyed TMO and Sunjata was a big reason, but as you've recently posted, he misses a lot. Choosing between TMO or GYPSY,I'd go with the one the star is in.

I would be interested to see TMO done around the country. I read somewhere that it was not going to happen, but I hope they can do that as it might help to recoup their losses.
As for Mr. Sunjata, he has been missed a lot recently, but he will be there tonight. Nothing against Bernadette Peters, but the material has been around for years. I would rather see something new before I see someone in a revivial of material with which I'm familiar.
I would also select TMO because too often people just choose a musical rather than a play. It would be nice to have support for non-musical productions.

GYPSY was very good, - actually better than I thought (I respect Bernadette and like her but I'm not 'In LOVE with her') though Bernadette won me over more in her acting than in her singing, which (the time I saw it) I felt like she was was 'pushing' her voice too much.
But I found TAKE ME OUT (despite a lot of logistical weaknesses) to be much more compulsively entertaining. And I HATE baseball. And though the eye candy on view is mighty tasty, you leave the theatre completely in love with skinny, hairy, sexy lil' Denis.

Take me out was great and shouldn't be missed. They could extend it. IT seems many shows publicise a closing date to try and boost ticket sales and then keep extending the close date.

I have a feeling the play is closing because they couldn't find anyone to play Darren Lemming. A "name" star won't take on the role because of the nudity, and it's a difficult role that a lot of actors just couldn't tackle. I have always maintained that the role of Darren Lemming is the most difficult role in the play. Daniel Sunjata owns that role. I've seen the play with and without him, and the play is never the same without him. It's a shame that theatregoers will flock to musicals, but they tend to stay away from plays. I wish there were more support for projects like this.

Well everybody, thanks for your input!!!
We ended up seeing TAKE ME OUT.
While I have mixed feelings about the play, I thought that Denis O'Hare was fantastic! And, Michael Duvert (an understudy who went on in the smaller roles of Rodrigues/Policeman) is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen (clothed AND naked.)
