Gavin Creel: Song Cycle @ the Met

Did anyone catch tonights commissioned show by Gavin at the Met (museum)? When he was interviewed on On Stage, he said he hoped one day to bring it to Broadway.

I was there! It was interesting. Gavin's a really talented songwriter, and his guests (Ryan Vasquez, Brandon Pearson, and Audrey Rose Young) were all very engaging, Vasquez being a real standout. I don't know how exactly it could continue as a show, other than performances at the Met and Met events, because it's so specific to the museum, but it was a pretty special piece of theater that Gavin and his team put together.

Gavin Creel: Song Cycle @ the Met

Just returned home from this and still feeling quite stunned! As a huge admirer of Creel's voice and technical ability as a singer, I've owned his solo, original albums more out of a sense of loyalty than anything else, so I went into this with low expectations of the music. But it was gorgeous. It definitely had a level of complexity that I did not foresee. It had all the emotion that I would expect, based off of interviews with him. He seems like such a genuine, compassionate force so it was inevitable that his work would be filled with pathos. But the careful structure and cleverness was a beautiful surprise to me. I was really moved and will definitely be getting tickets to the next incarnation. I believe he told the Times he intends it to go off-Broadway and then eventually Broadway.

Vasquez and the other guests were also wonderful, as were the band.

This really could work if the paintings that inspired Gavin's music were given the "Immersive Van Gogh" treatment while Gavin sang his music.
