The amazing composer Menotti has passed away, he was well into his 90's.
One of the greatest composers of the 20th century in opera or music theater, his music and opera will be remembered the world over.
Also a genius librettist, he wrote the librettos for all of his own operas as well as most of the operas of his on and off lover, Samuel Barber.
Many of his operas were performed on the Broadway stage, including The Telephone and The Medium as well as The Consul and The Saint of Bleeker Street.
If you aren't familiar with his music, check out the first two operas mentioned above, they are wonderful and accessible.
You will be missed, Mr. Menotti

Posted: 2/2/07 at 1:17pmI saw the original Broadway production of The Saint of Bleecker Street. One of the most thrilling musicals I've ever seen. I was about 18 at the time and still remember that Kaye Ballard sat next to me. I had seen her a few months before in The Golden Apple. I recall that during the Broadway run the *entire* second act of the show was broadcast on the Ed Sullivan Show. That's a Sullivan show that I wish would be released on DVD.

This is sad news.
I had the pleasure of being in a great production of 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' in college and have loved all of his music ever since. I am actually kind of shocked to hear he was still alive since my professors always talked about him and his music as if he were already gone, and this was about 10 years ago.

Posted: 2/2/07 at 5:40pmI've been a fan of Menotti since hearing CONSUL. His music deserves a second chance: some of it -- like THE LAST SAVAGE, which premiered at the Met to glowing reviews -- has never been recorded.
