I was a little disappointed with this show. The actors did a great job but I didn't realise it was read through with scripts in hand, and very little in the way of costumes and sets. Two people on two keyboards for music.
Yet, the audience, a full house, loved it. At least I'll know what to expect next time and will enjoy the show more.
I need to add that I was a little put off having paid $35.00 for my ticket, to find out that all the performers donated their time, after only one rehearsal.
No sets, only 2 musicians, no costumes... why $35.00?
Expensive theatre rental (Sundays are double rates) and royalties probably. How big was the auditorium?
There are a number of companies in the U.S. and U.K. that present these sort of staged readings - Musicals in Mufti, Lost Broadway, Musicals Tonight! It is a good way to give shows that are rarely seen today an airing.
I saw KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN in the same Darlinghurst Theatre several weeks ago, and that was the same price, but a lot more effort had been put it. The theatre sits 120.
The similar groups in Manhattan often act as a springboard for a show being revived. CHICAGO, case in point.
CHICAGO was presented by Encores! (as was FINIAN'S RAINBOW and WONDERFUL TOWN both which transferred to Broadway). The big difference is that Encores! have a huge budget to play with whereas Musicals in Mufti, Lost Musicals and I would think the company that did GIRL CRAZY in Sydney probably struggled to find theatre rental money.
