Does anyone know when The Glass Menagerie will be starting previews -- it says on Playbill "Sometime in February"...Uhh, thats quite soon...I dont think the marquee is up yet at the Barrymore and I would assume its going into previews at least within the next month. Is Menagerie trying to get into the Walter Kerr (I remember reading that Jessica Lange didn't want to perform in the Barrymore)...What's going on with this show? It's the next thing to start after ...Scoundrels on Monday...
Previews begin Thursday, February 24, and the engagement runs 20 weeks.
Thanks alot...I was unaware that it was a limited engagement!
These days, most revivals are. If it is a hit, it will probably extend.
I wish natalie portman was still going to be in it. I was so excitied when they announced they reviving the show and she was going to be in it.
Dallas Roberts is really going to be incredible in it though. Unless David Leveaux does something COMPLETELY random with the concept of the show - Roberts will be a brilliant Tom. I just saw him in "A Number" and it was one of the best performances I've seen on the NY stage in a while.
The "casting" of Natalie Portman was only ever a rumor. Leveaux lobbied hard for Sarah Paulson, but the producers wanted a more recognizable name, like Natalie. Scarlett Johannson was also mentioned for the role.
Now, did I read that Josh Lucas has been cast in this revival? If so, then wild horses couldn't stop me from seeing this. I LOVE him.

I'm still lamenting the absence of Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke.

I am too, Jo, I am too! BUT, Josh's inclusion is going a long way toward making up for it
I just got my tickets for the first matinee--Feb. 26, 2pm. I'm in Row F of the orchestra. So, if Jessica Lange has a repeat of her silent performance in "Streetcar", I'll be able to hear her.
Again, RSL and Ethan were just rumors, and never cast. I don't know where the rumor that Robert was going to be in the show came from. When it began circulating, he was already busy shooting "House". And, obviously, Ethan is doing "Hurlyburly", which I'm seeing on Saturday night. Can't wait.
The ubertalented Josh Lucas is playing The Gentleman Caller.
I saw Lange in Long Day's Journey Into Night from the last row in the orchestra and could hear her fine, so I think she's learned to project since she was in Streetcar.

Leonard and Hawke may have only been rumored, but the initial Playbill announcement sure didn't come across that way.

If you ever wonderful when a show starts previews...why not just check BWW's show directory?
Please don't tell me I do all of this work for nothing!
I've heard that Ms. Lange, who is one of my favorite actresses on the planet, has really improved her vocal projection since playing in "A Streetcar Named Desire". She was dead set against playing the Barrymore, though, because she blamed the theatre for her voice troubles.

I would have loved to see Patty Duke as Amanda in the Glass Menagerie. If anyone was lucky enough to see her performance for the Roundabout Reading Series (May 2002) you know what I mean.
Also with Patty Duke you would not have to worry about her being heard, regardless of the theater.

BTW Robert Sean Leonard played Patty Duke's son Tom in the Roundabout Reading.

Yeah Patty would love to appear in this play but Jessica Lange has taken the main role of Amanda already in the new production of the play.
Maybe next time she will get the chance to play that role hopefully in yet another production.
I saw Sally Field as Amanda in DC. It was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen.
