The filmed version of the stage musical OKLAHOMA! with Hugh Jackman was shown on PBS - I'm sure it wasn't only Jackman fans who watched that...And while the numbers were not outstanding, the TONY awards viewership, at least for 2004 and 2005, did see Hugh strut his stuff musically speaking.

I'm one of those heathens who was actually unimpressed with Ewan's work in Moulin Rouge. The love duets with Nicole Kidman that some felt were so magical, sounded like amateur shrieking to me.
Yes, I know that's an unpopular opinion. So sue me.
There was talk on some of the boards of Michael Ball doing the role after his success in Cork. Granted he's not a box office draw for some - but since it's McGregor, I'm not too unhappy.

I did not like Ewan's singing at all in "Moulin Rouge". It sounded like he was yelling.
I was, however, impressed with Glenn Close at ALW's birthday bash concert.

Forget the singing, I'm still getting over the "You were the chosen one!" speech from Revenge of the Sith. That broke my heart.
Anyway, stepping out of geek mode for a second to point something out...during the final weekend for "The Boy From Oz" last fall, there was an interview with Hugh in the NY Times, and they asked if he could pick his replacement in BFO, who would it be?
Hugh's answer? Ewan McGregor.

1. Hugh Jackman has done more than XMen... and if you think about Ewan, he doesn't have the most impressive resume, no offense to those who like him.
2. Hugh has played Joe Gillis before
3. I was hoping for either Hugh or Michael Ball, which I figured it would go to Hugh because Michael is an unknown to the outside world.
4. Hugh definitely has a big fan base, part of whom are the ozalots. The show TBFO survived basically because of him.
5. He has a Tony. He has the star-power, and he has the stage presence. EDIT: And I just read the person before me... what they said, and I know all that, but still Hugh was the one who held the show together and had Barbara Walters head-over-heels
6. Close and Jackman would have been the better choice, and soon people will realize that. Jackman is a much stronger singer, and I really don't think that Ewan will be able to pull Joe Gillis off.

I'm all for opinions and all, but I must argue the point of Ewan not having an impressive resume. I have to admit that besides us Ewan fans, the only movies that were such a big hit that audiences remember still are Star Wars and Moulin Rouge- but Star Wars is like mega-hit here. Ewan did have at-the-time hits though, Trainspotting, etc...
As for Hugh, X-men is yeah a hit and so was Van Helsing, and yeah the televised Oklahoma brought in a good audience. But still, Ewan's movies themselves just have more staying power. Not saying of course that Hugh Jackman doesn't, I love him, but my point is just to prove that Ewan does have a VERY impressive resume. His movies are diverse and different and he does every role very well (cept the 2 I havent seen yet..but that's a different story)
AND yes Hugh has movies coming out but not at what Ewan's doing. And, don't think this bratty when I point out that Ewan has around 39 movies compared to Hugh Jackman's 23 because 23 is HUGE and a very good success. Again, I just need to set out to prove that while some may diagree that Ewan is good for the role at hand, he does have an impressive resume.
::crawls off soap box::
This of course, is not to be offensive to Hugh Jackman fans. Just making a point.

this is going to be incredible...amazing, even. I love Ewan's voice because it is original...something definitely that I haven't heard before. it's somewhat refreshing! :)

not quite sure if I should be happy for Hairspray just yet... I really want Matt to reprise as Link
Am I the only one who couldn't stand Glenn Close on Broadway? And she is doing the film version, oy! I got to see the show a second time with Betty Buckley and it was like seeing a totally different show. Forget Barbara Streisand and Liza Minelli I would have LOVED to see Patti Lupone do the film version. We got cheated out of her coming to Broadway to do it originally.
Just my 2 cents

I say three cheers for "good" movie musicals. After all, does anyone want the film makers to butcher a stage musical and have it turn out like A Chorus Line? Or Fiddler on the Roof?

A Chorus Line sucked.
But I do think Sunset Blvd is going to be good. Very good.
I think SUNSET is a very filmable show, as it all happens in soundtages and Hollywood, etc. there are no big dance numbers which modern directors always seem to struggle with on film. I hope they retain the house set and the original costume design.
I wonder, though if Glenn can pull off the singing so over a decade later . . .

Thank you for your email josefina – auditions, let alone casting have yet to even take place for Sunset. Don’t always believe what you read in the press!
With best wishes

Take it however you want to - it could be that RUG is still not ready to announce anything yet.

Hugh, Hugh, Hugh. Isn't Joe supposed to be older than Betty, but younger than NOrma? Ewan just looks young. Blech.

Glenn won't be around the horse shows for a while I guess.. Noting like ordering some food, turning around and nearly tripping over her.

According to BBC News from the link above, Joe isn't cast yet so who knows what's going on:
>>According to Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman are potential co-stars.<<
Hugh's a little tall for Betty...
As much as I love Hugh, I can see Ewan in this role very easily.
And for Betty..how about Rachel McAdam from "Mean Girls" and the "Notebook"..I understand she can sing rather well.
