ok so I don't know if anyone is interested in this..I figured i would post a review about it anyways...I saw Godspell at the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ today, so I figured why not post how it was.
So I attended this show today with my aunt, my mom, and my friend and we sat in Center Orchaestra Row N...great view and the place is pretty big for not being an actual broadway show...it has a big mezzanine from what I could tell and the orchaestra and stage are big too. So for this show, I went in knowing nothing of what Godspell was about, I mean I had listened to the songs, Day by Day and Prepare ye the way of the Lord, but besides listening to those I did not know what this show was at all. My aunt who was in it in a local community theatre show a few years ago tried to explain it to me, but I had to experience for myself to really find out about it. So without knowing anything and not knowing what to expect either, I came out of Godspell and LOVED IT!
it is seriously a must see at the Papermill Playhouse!..(it closes on October 22nd though, so hurry lol)...the lines in this show is soo funny and the songs start out really slow then go into being so energetic..I was laughing along to the show and clapping at times too. The cast of this show is FABOLOUS, they really all need to go to Broadway!...they interacted with the audience so much too, it was great and I know one of the cast members personally too and he was fantastic in it. Such a great, funny, energetic, uplifting show. At the times when it was meant to be serious even, it was still amazing!
The Cast was:
Uzo Aduba
Sarah Bolt
Sarah Chase
Holly Davis
Robin De Jesus
Joshua Henry (played John the Baptist)
Patrick Heusinger
Dan Kohler (played Jesus)
Anika Larsen
Telly Leung
Julie Reiber
--So overall, amazing show, amazing cast, loved it..would see it again if it were not for closing so soon.

i saw it yesterday and was very glad i went! i didnt see it forced at all, though there were a few minor things that werent needed. there were so beautiful voices in there! anika's day by day was gorgeous. loved sara chase's number. everyone really!! (very impressed with) i LOVED the contemporary things they added, particularly the kanye west's golddigger bit that sara chase did. i forget at the moment but it was hilarious. telly reminded me alot vocally of tyler maynard.
did anyone else see it? thoughts? i forget which songs they updated (rhythm/genre wise) anyone?

"I found it bland and forced, and the ending is absolutely awful."
The ending of the show is difficult to do and it takes a large directorial talent to make it work.

It was just quick and had no emotional resonance.
Ours had the full orchestrations. Our cast, which had been very attached to Jesus throughout the course of the show, were writhing on the floor and crying out, and the lights were flashing. Jesus was tied to the traditional chain link fence we had spanning the stage. During the "Oh God" parts, a single spotlight would hit Jesus, and a dim red light allowed us to be seen. When Jesus died, the spotlight very slowly went out. Everything went to black, and then slowly the lights came up a light blue, like morning, and we went into the "Long Live God"s after a few moments to process what had happened.
But another part of the finale's success is how you've led up to it. I'm not saying our production was perfect, because it definitely wasn't, but we were more energetic and much more relatable to the audience. I heard a great deal of sniffling as the lights came up afterwards.
