Godspell - Music and NEW lyrics by Stephen Schwartz??- Page 2

To be honest, I thought knowing Godspell uses direct text from the Gospel of St. Matthew was sort of a given? I'm not trying to be sassy here (really, I'm not), but that's the whole basis of the show.


ETA: What I mean is, I thought the reference to the "NEW" lyrics would have referred to something other, or additional, than the Gospel.

No, it's "new" lyrics because he took them and added to them or changed them around to make them fit the music.
