Going Back To Shows If An Understudy Was Originally On

I am curious for those who live in NYC and surrounding areas. If you go see a show for the first time and an understudy is on in the lead role, do you go back, buy another ticket and attempt to see the show with the hopes of the lead in? Or do you just say that was the draw of the coin? I'm not talking about a show that you love and go see multiple times. Simply a show you enjoyed, but all the leads were not in. Also does it make a difference if the lead (that you missed) is Tony nominated? Will you return to see that actor/actress?

It depends on the situation for me. I often see shows a second time after I see everything else that's opened. It's fun to go back and catch things I may have missed. Usually I see everything by the Tonys, right now I still have to get to Lucky Guy (which I'll see next week), so over the summer I'll go back to a bunch.

But to specifically answer your question it really depends. Usually I feel like I get the show without that actor and may not feel like I have to go back. If it's someone I really like or want to see then I will. It may also depend on if they're nominated or not. The only understudy for a principle role I saw this year was Taylor Richardson (who was on for Annie). That was not one I felt I had to go back to, unless Lilla was nominated. Of course I really want to see Jane so may go back for that. But if that stunt casting didn't happen I probably wouldn't be back at the Palace until something new came around.
