Did anyone see this show when it was Off-Broadway a few years ago? I am currently doing it and there is a number called "No Blacks, No Chicks, No Jews" in the second act. It is about the blatant exclusion of certain groups in golf clubs of the past. During rehearsal, we thought it was so funny. Audiences just look at us with horror when we sing it not really getting that it's a parody. Anyone familiar with that song? And if so how did it go when you saw it/did it?
Just curious.

I know the show, and I actually really like this song, but to be completely honest with you I'm not really sure what you're asking. I mean I never saw or did the show but I know it from the CD, and I can only imagine the writers crafted the song through a series of workshops and readings, so it had to be working somewhere, right?
If your audience isn't getting that it's supposed to be funny, then it's either A) The fault of your director, or B) The lack of intelligence of your audience. Not much you can do about either one of those things, if you're an actor. My advice is just to stay true to the material and get 'em on the next bit.

That's a shame, where were you doing the show?
Never heard of this, but sounds like it could be funny.

Blind/deaf suggestion as to never having seen the show or heard it
But maybe having the punch line as the title of the song is what's throwing it off? I know in "every little step" they were talking about how audiences weren't laughing at "Tits and Ass" because they knew what the song was going to be about as soon as they read it. After changing the song to "Dance: Ten. Looks: Three" they got a lot of laughs after.
