A rule of thumb is that Many Jewish people like to go to the theater on Christmas, Good Friday and Easter because there are better seats available. We Catholics feel the same way about Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanna.

Got tickets for Gypsy on easter & I am a goyim

Last year, on Ash Wednesday , I could not get to church for the ashes. To mollify my boss, I smoked a cigar & put the cigar ashes on my forehead.

Priest said last night in services you need not receive ashes. Unless I change jobs & work in the city where they dispense ashes on express lanes, I will do without them next year

Good Friday is a day of reverance and even though I would love to see Harvey...somehow religion means more to me. It also is kinda weird cause Good Friday happens to be my birthday this year....go figure! Celebrating the death of someone on the day I was born!

You have plenty of time to find a book about the Passion or the teachings of Christ. You'll have plenty of time to read on the plane. You can also bring your CD player on the plane and listen to your music over the roar of the jet.

WOW... I want looking for all of this and that. I really just needed help with my question. I didn't need all this really I'm not going on Easter and even if I were that would be my business not yours. this isn't fair or kind. I go to church on Sundays and holidays. I have nerve done anything other then church on good Friday It's not like I missing out on something we do religiously here. Also I'm pretty sure it doesn't say anywhere in the bible that it is forbidden to see a Broadway so on Good Friday.

You say you're not judging people, but from where I sit, you are doing an excellent job of just that. Everyone has different beliefs and not everyone is as devout in their faith as the next person. What you do is great for you, but you shouldn't sit there and pass judgement on someone who chooses not to follow your path of faith.

I'm Roman Catholic (yes, there IS a difference between Christians and Catholics -- we are NOT the same) and was raised that in my house there was no music or tv from 12pm-3pm on Good Friday. (look in the bible -- this would be the period of time when Christ was suffering and then died) I sing in my parish choir and every year I cantor the youth group's Passion Narritive at Good Friday Mass (where we do contemporary music from Godspell and JCS as well as the traditional hymns such as "Were You There?"). I spend an hour in church. From what I read in your post, that makes me a bad person because I spend the rest of the day going about the things I need to do? I worked last year and the year before on Good Friday until 2pm and went straight to church.

Im not going to sit here and defend my faith and my beliefs, but your post made me feel as if I should. What it all comes down to is how you were raised and what you were taught. You were raised one way, you have one set of beliefs, that's fine. But don't try to impose them on other people or point fingers at how horrible you think it is for people to do anything but spend the whole day in church. That's your thing -- not everyone else's.

PennyLou asked a scheduling question, she got her answer and then this was practically turned into a religious debate. I've said what I wanted to say and that's all -- I won't let this discussion go any further on my end. If you don't like what I've said, oh well, you'll get over it. I've probably shocked you and you probably now think I'm a horrible person, but that's fine too. I live my life for me and I will never EVER let someone else tell me that what I BELIEVE and believe IN is wrong.

BTW -- Penny never mentioned her faith at first... what if she doesn't observe Good Friday? Then you pretty much made your whole spcheel and called her (and anyone else who isn't spending the whole day in church) disrespectful.

It is called "Good" Friday because by virtue of His Passion and Death, Jesus restored "good" to the world and brought salvation to us. In a sense, He took away the sins of Adam and gave us the opportunity for a "good" life with Him.
