we unfortunately only have 2 performances at my high school. the school board won't let us do more. we've done YAGMCB, Annie, Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, Snow White and the 7 dwarfs(ours was a musical), and the wizard of oz. i know my director has done little shop and damn yankees and we are currently looking at carosel, south pacific and bye bye birdie.

If you dont mind an unknown, Flapper is good. It's really cheesy, but it's cute. The music isnt too hard, the dancing is fun, and it has lots of characters so there is lots of room for extras. My high school just got finished with it and it was said to be the best musical we've done since our new director started. Oklahoma is good too, but really overdone. I also suggest Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Boyfriend, and Grease (which is also a bit overdone but fun anyway)

Bye Bye Birdie
The Wizard of Oz (though my school production was HORRIBLE)
The Wiz
South Pacific
Hello Dolly (we did our final year; I feel it was entirely innappropriate for the age of the actors involved. It just didn't *look* right)
Grease (classic, but cliche)
The Sound of Music
Annie
The King and I (turned out really well)
Into the Woods (probably one of my top 2 of all time)
Mystery of Edwin Drood
On the way to Forum
Little Shop
Cinderella

....the list goes ON and ON!

Recently our high school (through tweeking a few things to please the school board) did Damn Yankees. I would suggest that and Little Shop.

The best part about Impromptu would be the topics. The best I've seen yet: "The best way to play golf is to hit the bloody thing"

"Good high school musicals" is actually not an oxymoron. If you actually have ridiculously talented actors and singers, like at my high school, your shows can be pretty damn good. Don't make assumptions if you don't know all the facts! re: Good High School Musicals

I know of high schools in this area that have done:
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS
A FUNNY THING...
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
ANYTHING GOES
DAMN YANKEES
THE PAJAMA GAME

Try going for somewhat well-known titles. It brings in the audiences... at least in this area. Updated On: 1/6/05 at 10:44 PM

Which are more talented at your school? Because the musical could go either way depending on whether or not your guys flourish more than your girls (lead wise) or vice versa.
For example: Les Miserables or Pirates of Penazance would be good if you had good guy leads at your school
If you have a good guys chorus (and dancers too): West Side Story or Kiss Me, Kate
or if you have one focusing girl: Annie Get Your Gun

It varies from school to school...

Camelot?

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a high school doing that show.

My school did Little Shop last year and did very well with it, but getting it together was a nightmare. Sure it has a small cast, but you have to have a plant. So you have to either have the money to rent one or the technical abilities to build one. But it can be a great show if you have the abilities.

UH...don't do Joseph unless you have A LOT of male talent (my school's doing it this year. No one knows why.). Oh, and there aren't any string parts for pit, which makes it suck all the more...just kidding.

Music Man, YAGMCB (for a smaller school?), TMM would be nice to do..., Guys and Dolls, King and I (works if you have a really good soprano), Les Mis, Fiddler, Forum...

I think that Honk is a good idea since not many schools do it. Godspell would also be fun!
