Micky Dolenz, best known as the mop-haired drummer in 60s boy band The Monkees, is joining the West End cast of Hairspray next year (from 2 February 2010), playing Wilbur Turnblad opposite Brian Conley, who will reprise his role as Edna.
Since topping the charts with The Monkees, whose television series led to international hits including Im A Believer, Last Train To Clarksville and Daydream Believer, Dolenz has carved a career in acting and directing. His stage credits include Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA on Broadway as well as Pippin', Grease and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.
His directing credits are listed as including "a stage version of Alan Parker's Bugsy Malone in the West End, the cast of which included a then unknown 14-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones".
Speaking about his latest role, Dolenz said: "I remember going to the original premiere of the movie in the 80's. I loved the piece then and I love it now. Having four daughters, I can certainly relate to Wilbur's love and support for his little girl."
