Posted: 7/23/11 at 8:22amThe original production had beautiful sets and costumes. They were the best thing about it. The show, on the whole, was weak. The tone was wrong, and the book was lame. I find the score fairly pallid, though it has a few good songs.

A jokey semi-anachronistic tone took over the whole show, so shifting from the cheerful playful scenes (Reinking teaching Grey about chainmail) into the battles in Act II that end in tragedy (or a life of regret) was really hard for the show to pull off. Ah, but there was wonderful music throughout.
