Saw the show in previews last night with wife. Liked it, but it needs a few fixes before opening night. Cast had a lot of energy, the five background harmony guys were great, dancing great, all women singing were great, band great, the guy in the long blonde hair (Jan - Sebastian Arcelas) should be the lead - great voice. The lead (Bobby) was adequate but his voice was so-so on a couple of songs (maybe he had a cold?) - REALLY bad for "Surfer Girl" - that definitely needs work (was actually irritating to listen to!). And it did have a story, not a deep story, but a good-enough story for this type of musical. Was a lot of fun, already bought tickets to see it again after it opens. Audience seemd to like it, no standing ovation but a LOT of applause. Especially liked the "Help Me Rhonda" song - Tituss Burgess was great! Wife and I have seen Beach Boys in concert numerous times, so obviously Beach Boys fans.
I don't really think it was disappointing - it was very enjoyable, just needs some work before opening. For example, I/we liked it a lot better than I/we liked Brooklyn, actually.
Tiny-Tune, Brooklyn sucks and I'm going to rejoice when it closes as the miserable failure that it is! It sucks! Worst cast recording I own. As dismal as GV sounds, I am sure it will come off better than Brooklyn: The Trash!
"What the hell happened to you? You look like a Make-A-Wish Kid. You know, I just knew you were gonna bring shame on this new family of ours, and it just figures you had to go make yourself over into some heroin-shootin skate board chic on the only day E! could interview you!" - Cherry Cherry, on her daughter Mary Cherry
I saw the show last night. I've never seen its equal in 30 years of seeing Boradway shows. The music, the lighting, the cast! All Fabulous. If this show doesn't run ten years I don't know which one will.
Ken, Thank you for your review. I saw the final dress and thought it was awful. I will be curious to see what changes they have made. But I will wait till after it opens and I read some of the critics reviews before I decide if it warrants a second viewing.
Well I do have my post-opening tickets and am hoping that it improves. I think that if you like Beach Boys music, you will like the show. If you don't - don't go. Wife and I happen to like the music, have seen Beach Boys live many times, and really did enjoy the show minus some improvements that can be made... I think they left out the last song listed in the Playbill - "Do It Again"....
Chris2 I think I know you. Did you go to Michael's Tony Bash last year? The tie is new tho! :) Keep it!!! I hope that you got a chance to call my voice coach, he is simply the best.
Anyways you sound like you liked the show more than I did. I did like it, tho, it was the most fun I've had since Mario Cantone! Another Boradway hit!!!!
The show is not as terrible as some would say, it's got it's faults, some BIG, but, the ensemble rescues the day (as always), my main hope is balance is found.
The three male leads left me wanting, not as sure as one would like, David Larsen is a cutie, but his voice shows signs of wear and tear, already.
Titus, my baby is fine and dandy, needs to work on his acting.
Brandon, great voice, must accept the fact he's a part of the evening, stop pulling back!
Ladies of the GV, Kate and Jessica are fun, and have a blast, no problems there.
The Surfer Guys are uneven, Chad is having fun, but are we?
Hearth Calvert is big and hot, yet seems unsure of every move he makes, FOCUS!
Jeff Martin, well let's just say the boy needs a leading role, he is the ONLY dancer in the entire production who gets it, and as buff as I hoped, (but not all the GV cast is fit and trim, the show does NOT deliver 100% in hot beach boy action, boohoo!), he's thinner than imagined, but pretty as a picture.
Tracey Beezer is a hottie who shakes, rattles and rolls, love her. All the ensemble women are top-notch, the guys need to catch up!
Ok, story-wise,"script is weak, yes, but keeps the evening moving along well enough, main love interests do not connect,David and Kate and Titus and Snow are "faking it"..c'mon gang, fall in love!
The beginning is fun ,liked the way the songs were used, the finale is absent, John C NEVER gets his endings right, David Warren HELP!
The reveal of the California beach is delish, the surfers hanging ten is inspired ,yet only Jeff Martin was steady on the board, OK, maybe he does have nice legs and buns and looks like a sun kissed beach God,is he from LA? Rest of cast should surf well too, it's a Beach Boys musical!
Ok, I'm on a ramble and it's almost time for work, please give it a chance, it is not as horrid as they make it out to be, critics be damned, I want it to work!
Desire is a funny thing, but I try not to laugh about it!

Is it true that they have been stopping previews performances in the middle of acts? If so do you think they will still be doing this by January 28th. I originally got tickets for then bacuse it was supposed to be the night after opening night and I thought everything would ba 99% set. Now I'm not a sure with a new opening date of Feburary 3rd.
I felt the ending was kind of....different. I think it would almost be better if things were not so happy. I really didn't like the whole gay thing they threw in there just to make a character seem deeper when he really isn't. And "God Only Knows"...they lyrics just made no sence to me-its such a great song but it looked so wrong for that moment. I'm sorry. Maybe its just me?
