The picture of the evil monkey man on the cover of "Evil Monkey Man," David Yazbek's new album, was drawn and titled by the artist's young son. Usually that sort of kid-centric nepotism is occasion for eye-rolling, but this isn't a case of a doting father lavishing 15 minutes of fame on his privileged spawn.
"I identified with the image," Yazbek says. "It's childish and nightmarish and comes out of a dark place and is still funny."
That, in a nutshell, is Yazbek's outlook on life and aesthetic in art. The native New Yorker is best known for his work in the theater; Yazbek is the Tony-nominated lyricist and composer of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "The Full Monty." But he's also a semi-closeted pop-rocker, writer of raucously unsettling tunes that don't make much of a commercial dent but please Yazbek to no end. As the songwriter puts it, in signature clear-eyed prose, "I have a well-paying day job, and I can do what the hell I want to do."
Link below. Love him!
Is anyone else going to his Joe's Pub concert tonight?
