Oh Grey Gardens, nearly three years gone and I still miss it like hell.

Grey Gardens was such an incredible show. I was at the final performance 3 years ago (it kind of scares me that it was that long ago!) and cried my eyes out. I wish more shows like this made it to Broadway...it truly was a transcendent, intimate, wonderful piece of theater.

And I would highly recommend the original documentary if you're curious about the show...I watched it after I saw the show for the first time and loved it. It also made the show all the more heartbreaking and Mary-Louise Wilson and Christine Ebersole's performances all the more remarkable for me...they truly became those two women onstage.

So I watched the documentary, then the 09 HBO movie.

Then I read the libretto+listened along with the cast recording.

I think it's AMAZING. I found the ending especially (I mean from {Around the world reprise till blackout}) moving and powerful, if slightly depressing, despite having only stage directions.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
