After months of anticipation, I finally got the chance to see this musical. I can proudly say that I was not dissapointed.
Christine Ebersole was truly fantastic, nailing both the comic aspects of the show, and making me feel all emotional inside during the dramatic moments. Around the World and Another Winter in a Summer Town were highlights.
The rest of the cast were all brilliant in their roles too, but something seemed off about Matt Cavenaugh's Jerry. He just seemed lazy during his scenes as Jerry. I mean, Jerry was a very quiet guy, but Matt just made him seem lazy in this show. I liked Matt's Joe, for the record.
Erin Davie was really good as the Little Edie of Act 1. She is a fine actress and singer who can sing with the right amount of emotion when needed.
Mary Louise Wilson was perfection as the mother in Act 2. Enough said.
Visually, the show was stunning. The sets were all very well done, from the house opening up in the prologue to the turntable in the second act. I liked how in the first act the parlor was all elegant and nicely put together, and in the second act, the whole set looked like it was pulled out of a junk yard. Tony Nominee for best sets, anyone?
The whole cast were all SOOO nice at the stage door. I got almost everyone's autograph, and I'll estimate that they all came out within 20 minutes or so.
Overall, a satisfactory evening of theatre. I wonder how long it will last on Broadway, though. It's not really a tourist show, and it might only be familiar to people who have seen the documentary beforehand. But who knows? Only time will tell...
