I dont know if this has been posted yet but I called the box office today for tickets and they have sold out the entire run.
I really hope they extend this show because I keep hearing great things. I am going to try the cancellation but I am guessing the lines are going to start getting bad pretty soon when this news gets out there.
The smart thing is to extend it or move it to another off broadway house. It would not make it on Broadway as it would not be commercially viable there sad to say
Ebersole, gives the performance of a lifetime.
Hope it extends for a year or more.
I loved it. On the top of my list of best new musicals this season.
Why don't you think it will make it on Broadway?

I don't think it would find an audience in an 900+ seat theatre. Part of why it works so well is that the farthest person is 14 rows from the stage.
The second act wouldn't work very well in a Broadway house, and I don't think they could fill the show to even 75% average.

This is an odd, weird little subject that would have a very hard time finding a large enough mainstream audience to support it. How would you market it (and remember that the reviews, including the Times, were mixed)? Also, fans of the film have already seen it at Playwrights and there aren't enough of them left to give a Broadway run a base. I also have a hard time seeing it turning a profit in a commercial Off-Broadway house (the only recent show to do so had only a couple of people in the cast; even the heavily hyped and much smaller Altar Boyz is nowhere near breaking even).
It should be happy to play out its limited engagement, get a recording and then have a life on the regional circuit.
Sadly, as Margo and others have said, virtually NO show is commercially viable in a Off Broadway house. It's just impossible to make a profit.
Hopefully, GREY GARDENS will do one more extension at Playwrights Horizon, though I think it would be virtually unheard of, and it might force their next scheduled show to be pushed back (a reason why GG can't play there indefinitely).
I don't think GG would turn a profit on Broadway, but I wouldn't rule out a transfer for next season - if not just because Christine Ebersole's performance is pretty much guaranteed a Tony in whatever season they open. Some producers are okay with losing money if its a project they really love. This season's transfer of WELL, being a good example.
My friend and I lined up for cancellations today at 11:30... we were first in line, stayed in line for 3 hours, and didn't get tickets
It was very disappointing

It's been sold out for the past few weeks.
I'd love for it to extend again because I'd love to see Ms. Ebersole.
However, I've been lucky to see many great shows lately, so I'm not holding my breath.
When I went to the show, I spoke to the woman in charge of cancellation, and she said there's been many nights where lots of people have come and not one cancellation ticket was available.

I loved Grey Gardens, and I think that Christine Ebersole is fabulous as Edie. It is the best of Off-Broadway...well one of the best.
Doug Wright did such a wonderful job.
I want to see it again.
