Hi guys-
My university is doing a production of The Dining Room next semester and the auditions are Wednesday and Thursday. I know it's set around a dining room (oddly enough), and that it revolves around a certain family and their assorted dramas throughout the day. The director is going to have us read cold from the script, but I was hoping to maybe get a jump on it a little
Does anybody know anything about any of the characters or their relationships in this play or the general storyline? Any info would help...thanks!
~Kim
I was in the Dining Room last year and it's not one family that the play centers around but various different families and their dramas. In one scene there are girls who end up drinking vodka and talking about their families, etc. It's a very well written play and one of that authors less weird plays. I hope you have fun with it. Pretty good piece.
My high school did the Dining Room this fall. There is no real general story line. It is really just a collection of scenes with a common theme, WASPS. Neil Simon writes about jews and AR Gurney writes about WASPS. The relationships vary from an obnoxious father and his son, an arguing husband and wife, an overbearing mother an her daughter, fighting brothers and sisters, women cheating on their husbands, little kids at a birthday party, and a father who's lesbian daughter wants to live at home again. It is a very ensemble show. The cast really needs to have a connection with each other. I suggest you read the script because it will help you get a look at the bigger picture of things. hope this helps.
Thanks so much...that helps alot
