I remember seeing speculation on Playbill.com not too long ago that Catherine Zeta-Jones was signing on to appear in a new Film-remake of Gypsy directed by Rob Marshall. Anyone hear anything more of this?

That's a HUGE coincidence that you just posted this! I *JUST* finished editing this for MovieMusicals.net (which will debut tomorrow!!!):

In June 2006, Liz Smith reported that Rob Marshall was interested in directing another film adaptation of the musical, starring , which recently was revived on Broadway starring Bernadette Peters. Smith reported first that Catherine Zeta-Jones would star, and two weeks later she also named Barbra Streisand to be in talks.

In November 2006, Michael Reidel of the New York Post reported that Harvey Weinstein was interested in producing GYPSY onto the big screen with Rob Marshall directing. He named both Meryl Streep and Barbra Streisand in talks for Mama Rose and Catherine Zeta-Jones negotiating for Gypsy Rose Lee.

For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Meryl Streep? That's a new idea.

Babs will be 65 next month. Maybe she can play Pop.

Catherine's too old for Gypsy/Louise.

FAR too old. I don't doubt that Rob Marshall could make a good movie out of "Gypsy", but at this point...why? I mean, the 60's movie had to suffer through Roz's attempts at singing/being dubbed and a few cuts, and the TV movie is a bit campy and very "filmed stage show", but at least you get the whole show and the songs sung properly by a good singer.

I love all the cast talks between the Weinsteins and Marshall. I still remember all the rumors about Britney Spears vs. Goldie Hawn (I think originaly) and Kathy Bates vs. Queen Latifah. Here we go again. I am hoping that they choose Barbra Steisand.

I think Streep would be amazing in the role.

Oh God! Please! Let this not be true! I am so SICK of Gypsy. One of the most overdone musicals of this or any lifetime!

Streep's about the same age as all the ladies who've played her on stage ... and is a better actress and at least as good a singer as most who've played her.

Merman was 51 when she opened as Rose.
Lansbury was 49.
Daly was 43.
Peters was 55.

Streep is almost 58, so she's pushing it.

Hey Cap'n why don't you post that JENNIFER HOLLIDAY will play Rose? That would stir up some excitement and be as accurate as your Oscar scoops. You could say her casting was a super secret surprise scoop!

JoeK, my single Oscar 'scoop' wasn't a scoop at all. It was a reference to an article posted by the over-anxious Tom O'Neil and a text message I got. Notice the question mark at the end of the thread title?

Sorry you took something posted on an internet message board (written questionably on purpose, at that) as fact. That's smart.

Oh I take nothing as fact, but I do like to hold people accountable to what they post.

JoeKev, did the Dreamgirls movie rape your grandmother or something? It seems to make you come unhinged.

JoeK, well, if you want to hold me accountable, here is what I said:

""Secret, surprise performance" at this year's Oscars...(Jennifer singing AIATY!!!)
Posted On: 2/22/07 at 12:17 AM

Or...not?

Early in the Oscar telecast, there will be a "surprise performance" that is very hush-hush.

Someone who was at the rehearsal texted me "Jennifer is singing" but that's all they said and won't respond to calls or texts. Jennifer Holliday? Jennifer Hudson? AIATY? One Night Only? Or a different Jennifer entirely?

Being that DREAMGIRLS is a blockbuster hit and got a blockbuster snub, it wouldn't surprise me that they allow "the song" to be sung. But they don't OWE the film any air time except for nominated categories.

Hmmmmmmmm. "

I posted the fact of there being a secret, surprise performance (which turned out to be Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and John C Reilly singing the new Marc Shaiman-written song) and that I got a text saying that Jennifer was singing. The texts turned out to be that Jennifer was singing at that moment that my friend sent the message. I just connected it to the surprise performance he told me to expect, just as Tom O'Neil reported.

Did I state it as fact? Certainly not. Notice how I proposed possibilities and started off the thread with "or not."

So there is my account. Now, where does the part where you're an asshole come from? Account for that.
