re: HAIRSPRAY in L.A.

I keep reading about all the 'topical' ad libs that Mr. Villanch is throwing out in HAIRSPRAY in LA. Is this something Harvey also did in the New York production? I find it a little odd - certainly not conducive to maintaining any sense of time and place in the piece. Apparently, Nathan did this in THE PRODUCERS, as well?

That was the one thing that bugged me about Der Bruce...Marc, how do you feel about it (I am assuming OK, if he's still at it)

im trying to remember if I ever heard harvey adlib anything that took you out of the time period. i dont remember. jackie hoffmans adlib as she reached the stage sometimes reflected current happenings but never anything that i felt took away from the show.

re: HAIRSPRAY in L.A.

The first time I saw HAIRSPRAY in New York, I was sitting in the orchestra left, first row, aisle seat. Jackie Hoffman passes between or row and the stage to make an entrance onto the stage during the second act. Well, she happened to step on my foot, which led to a nice, 45-second conversation we had in front of the entire audience. I felt special.

I also, being ignorant, thought for a while that she was Fraun (sp?) from the Austin Powers movies.
