Though 9 musicals have won the Pulitzer for DRAMA, there are 2 that won the Pulitzer for MUSIC.
THE SAINT OF BLEEKER STREET by Menotti won the Pulitzer for music in 1954. It opened at the Broadway Theatre in 1954
THE CONSUL also by Menotti, opened at the Barrymore Theatre in 1950 and won the Pulitzer for music that year.
I wish I had posted this earlier, because I was hoping that Hamilton might be the very first musical to win the Pulitzer for both Drama and Music. I have a feeling though, that the producers didn't even submit it for the music award. I have a feeling that most producers don't realize that Broadway scores are eligible for the music award as well. Can you help me spread the word on this? Maybe a few more Broadway composers can win the Pulitzer in the future!
What musicals do you think would have had a shot at this over the years?
