Wow, this is a surprise! Maybe Barry has been watching all the TABOO bashing and just did not have thick enough skin.

Well, I certaintly won't pass judgement on a show that didn't happen. But I will say the opening was the "talk of the town" at the Walnut Street theater Press Opening of "Annie" last night.
Several Annie cast members were all set to go. Personally,I am pretty disappointed. It was well-casted, for sure. Hope it gets a second wind.

Posted: 11/13/03 at 1:29pm"Harmony" is not Manilow's first musical...! Check out "The Drunkard".

Posted: 11/13/03 at 3:14pmDarcie Roberts was on the tour of COPACABANA. That's too bad the show did not work out. We have enough shows with a singer/songwriter's songs, though...

Barry should go and get plastered with Farrah and Hilary.

Cute!...but poking fun or making light at a snuffed project about to premier, that is surrounded by a great deal of time, talent, effort and creativity is a bit below the belt.
Too often those who make such comments have no clue what or who is involved in this side of the industry. Sure, it's "business", as long as it doesn't affect you or yours it's ok to say "get over it".
Too bad for Brian D'Arcy James, who might have had the role of his career, as well as the rest of the disappointed cast & creative team. Good things come eventually.

BANNED IN BERLIN
It seems an investor must have pulled out at the last minute, just like THE VISIT at the Public.
Guess Kander and Ebb can get stinkin' with Barry and Farrah and Hilary as well.

You are right, Gothampc. But it's an understandable mistake: I saw the show--it should have been "banned." (tee hee)

Posted: 11/13/03 at 5:15pmThe role of his career? I hardly doubt that! Brian is wonderful but I think his time will come but NOT in Harmony.

Posted: 11/13/03 at 6:12pmHeard one song from it on a show recorded at Carnegie Hall & thought it was great. Critics think of him as they did of Peter Allen & do of Wildhorn . They write the dreaded "pop music" . Music is music & as long as it is a good song, who cares. The critics take a high & mighty attitude that "Pop Music" is not worthy of Broadway . Give me a break.

No. They write dreaded "bad pop music." That's where the "dread" comes from. Just watch how Boy George's pop music is singled out for praise in the Taboo reviews. Try to recall, if you are able, how pop singer/songwriter David Yazbek's songs in "The Full Monty" were highly regarded.
Fortunately, in the real world, critics are not as one-note as you always are in your criticism of critics.

Posted: 11/13/03 at 9:23pmCritics praise music because they don't understand it and have no experience in the creation of it. Everybody can write, no matter how badly. But crafting music is a mystery to most people, especially taste-free critics. Updated On: 11/13/03 at 09:23 PM

Posted: 11/13/03 at 9:48pmIt's a stance, but it's a ridiculous one. It's a gross generalization and over-simplification, which is why it resonates with you.
