There's a great set of medlies entitled "100 years of Broadway" arranged by Mac Huff that I directed the other year at a high school I taught at. It breaks the past 100 years into several categories and then has medleys of important songs from each of the categories. The first section is the early years, then a medley of songs from the '30's, next is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein and their Contemporaries, there is a Sondheim/Lloyd Webber medley, etc--and it goes all the way up to the present day. It would work nice if you could integrate some solos (or full songs) in between the different medleys. We did this whole multimedia slide show along with it that projected the show logos or pictures of the composers onto a huge screen. I also wrote different narratives to introduce each song. The different medleys already come with narrative introductions written in. E-Mail me if you want any more information on this or where to order a copy of it. I hope I have helped you at least a little!
How about something from 'Pipe Dream' (1955)? A completely overlooked Rogers & Hammerstein musical with some nice songs such as 'Sweet Thursday', 'Everybody's Got a Home But Me' and 'The Next Time It Happens' (which was interpolated into the revival of 'Flower Drum Song' in LA but, sadly, removed by the time the show got to New York). Try looking at a year's big winner ('My Fair Lady' 1956, 'Hello, Dolly' 1964, 'Chorus Line 1975) and then find other shows from that year ('Most Happy Fella' 1956, 'Funny Girl' 1964, 'Chicago' 1975) and you'll find great songs from shows that didn't win many (if any) awards.

I was in a musical review about ten years ago and we did exactly what you are looking for. Our show was called Broadway then and now. We started with something from Pirates of Penzance and went through a lot of the decades.....E-mail me if you would like a list of the songs.
