Hairspray again

Posted: 7/4/03 at 7:04pmI was delighted to see Hairspray again last night for the second time. The first time was January and I was had the pleasure of watching the entire cast intact from January with a few exceptions. The main performers were all there. The performance was much more polished and they ad libbed more. I noticed a few slight differences. Since the Tonys, the audience applauded when each star appeared especially Tracy and Harvey. Great job. The audience really fell in love with the show and I was happy to see Hairspray before a lot of them leave in July and August. Jackie Hoffman is a riot and would be wonderful as Mrs. Meers in Millie.

Posted: 7/4/03 at 10:00pmI don't think it is fair that you brush the show aside just because the original cast is leaving. The replacements are not less than the original cast and will bring something new, but equally wonderful to the show. You are selling the replacement cast memebers WAY short.

Posted: 7/5/03 at 11:49pmYears ago I had an experience with a replacement cast, so to speak. The Broadway touring show of Hello Dolly was playing in San Francisco. Ginger Rogers was Dolly. Just the night before, I'd seen Carol Channing in Thoroughly Modern Millie (the movie -- yes, this was a LONG time ago) and I suddenly couldn't envision anyone but Carol Channing as Dolly and was already gearing up to be disappointed. Well, I don't think it took me more than a minute into the show to forget that Carol had originated the role. Ginger was outstanding! I was lucky enough to meet Ginger in London a few years later and tell her how much I enjoyed her in Dolly. A real sweet lady, too! So don't think the show will be any less with a replacement cast. Go and enjoy!

Posted: 7/6/03 at 12:03pmThat's what happened to myself. Only, I went to see Hairspray with some friends and Kathy Brier was filling in for Marissa that day. My friends were dissapointed and wanted to leave, but I said "Give it until she sings the first verse of Good Morning, Baltimore...we'll look at each other, and if you smile...we know she'll be great!" So after the first verse, we all looked at each other and smiled, because we knew that Kathy would be amazing, which she was!
