Hairspray search

OMG! So today I had my appointment for the Hairspray movie. I was shocked when I arrived to see Diana DeGarmo from American Idol there to audition for Penny. Also two swings from the Broadway Show were there to audition for Penny. Shannon Durig, the current Broadway Tracy was there, the current Little Inez, along with a girl from the annie tour, there was also the understudy for Tracy in the national tour was there, plus Kathy Deitch from the original Broadway cast of Wicked and Footloose. It was actually pretty funny. A little boy about twelve who has been in like thirty six movies (He was the son in the "Haunted Mansion movie) was there to audition for Seaweed. He didn't look twelve in his picture though. It was insane!!!! There were so many people I recognized!!!

so are they secretly searching for Penny at these calls as well? if so thats sooo exciting! spill the details, girl. :)

They aren't searching for Penny's. This was an appointment day. The open call in NYC is on Saturday and they are just searching for Tracy, Seaweed, and Little Inez. However, I heard that in Atlanta, alot of thin girls showed up. So go anyway!!!!! You never know!!!

thanks for the info! i'm planning on goin. like i said on another thread a couple of days ago, the more you put yourself out there, the more likely you'll be found. :)

It was a really great audition. I went in, right after Diana DeGarmo, who may I say is the nicest person ever!!! I went in and they had me sing the last sixteen bars of Good Morning Baltimore with the piano. I then read from the movie script with a reader. They filmed me the whole time. When I was done reading the scene (where Tracy is fighting with her mother about going to the audition) the guy said, "Well you got your point across!" Don't know what that means exactly but it was just a really great experience. I mean you would also think that all of the girls in the waiting room, being as they are all on Broadway, would be a little stuck up. But they were all extremely down to earth. And the people in the room were amazing!!!!

how did you get an appointment? did you go to the open call and get a call back and then get an additional appointment or do you have an agent or whats the deal? this is all new to me. :) so glad you had a great audition!

I heard that Arbender was there as well. guess this was his 3rd of 4th time being seen for seaweed for this movie.... I dont know but he got there and they stopped the appointments to take him in and he was in there for about 30 mins and sang alot of stuff.... and they were talking forever.... Later that day I saw him eating with one of the casting directors so hopefully thats a good sign. I asked him about it after the show and he said its best to simply audition for everything and then let it go. If you always get your hopes up you will eventually go insane.... So he says his goal in any audition is to do the best he can at that time.....that made no sense to me at first but now i get it.... as long as you please yourself the rest does not matter. He so freaking positive.

Did anyone else see him there. His name is Arbender ( hard to forget) black guy currently in the bway cast and also covers Seaweed. ps hes on this saurday o check him out..... I think im gonna start a thread for him someplace cause i'm sure people all over love him

Arbender is terrific, but I think they are looking for someone younger to play Seaweed, from what I've heard. If not, I think they'd just cast Chester Gregory in the role, who was the absolutely PERFECT Seaweed on Broadway for more than two years and is a great dancer, actor and WHAT A VOICE!
