OK, I know I'm more than a year behind on this, but today I FINALLY got to see "Hairspray"! I've been listening to the score since this summer when I got around the purchasing the CD, but nothing could prepare me for getting to see it live.
I'm not going to go into specifics with the cast and whatnot, because, overall, they were all pretty fantastic. I'll note that Carly Jibson was really great, she carried the show on her back, the audience really fell in love with her. Now there were a few excessive scenery-chewers, who I don't plan on pointing out, but, all-in-all a terrific cast!
I'm extremely happy that I got to see "Hairspray", and I'd like to say that anyone who can't enjoy it really needs to seek therapy. It mangages to keep the audience in hysterics without ever falling into cynicism. I think that we should be thankful that we have a show like this on broadway; great score, great sets, grest costumes, great cast, just GREAT. Anyone who in worried about the future of musical theater should get themselves to the Neil Simon, and fast!

Posted: 10/9/04 at 9:11pmPleaseChangeMe; it is that kind of cynicism that I was touching on in my original post. I don't mean to say that all musicals must be as jubillant and high-spirited as "Hairspray", but I don't see why the show doesn't qulaify as a damn good American musical. It is original, and of high-quality. I'd go so far as to say that "Hairspray" is like many of the great shows from the golden age, only updated to suit modern tastes and 60's sentiment. It is not to be compared with other modern shows- the names of which I will not mention- that are all fluff and no quality. Shows do not have to be dark or challenging to be of quality.
