starlight, sorry for the confusion, but i am not defending haylie's casting or her perfomance, i have yet to go watch her in the show, so i am in no way defending what she does....
i am all for GOOD starcasting, but BAD casting.. especially when the boost isnt needed and you are replacing the best person you have had in the role....... I d NOT condone.

You just said you haven't even seen her yet, how do you know she's "bad" casting? Are you simply judging by a video of her FISRT performance ever?

But it doesn't matter if YOU condone it. The producers are doing it. If you feel so strongly, get into the producing game.

i will judge when i see her. true, i havent heard a single good thing about her, and i am not judging by the video. i simply making a point that GOOD starcasting is fine to boost sales, but I don't approve of casting people who cant do it.
as far as producing, I am wanting to expend into that actually.

Having experienced many horrible stars in stunt-cast roles, I can safely say this is not one of them. Melanie Griffith in Chicago was. Amanda Peet in Barefoot was. Haylie Duff in Hairspray wasn't. For her 8th show, she looked like she was one of the team. And she's VERY nice.

"as far as producing, I am wanting to expend into that actually.'
You'd better go back to school if that's the case. No one is going to write big checks to invest in your shows if you can't spell the simplest words, nor express yourself in English. I'm not being mean nor sarcastic - I'm telling you the God's honest truth.

im assuming you've never made a typo then?
I would reply to you the same I replied to the woman who got snotty with several important people at the Neil Simon one day, but I don't think Rob would approve....
You know I'm not talking about typos - and if you don't realize that, then you're in even bigger trouble.
Good night.
wow, this thread is just... wow.
let's just let opinions be opinions. if someone thought haylie was good... great. that's what the producers wanted, i'm sure. get people to see the show, at least out of curiosity for this new casting choice. now whether or not "she looks like a seasoned veteran" is not up to this one poster to decide, but it is how he/she feels. no need to get all pissed about it.
threads that end up like this just blow my mind... merely bc i dont understand what ppl think will be achieved by argueing with each other over opinions. maybe i'm missing something, though.
as for my opinion... well i'm assuming most know how i feel about haylie. but shannon. hands down, shannon is the best damn tracy that has ever been on that stage. marissa acted the crap outta that role, but she couldn't sing. carly sang great and was a good actress, but she just didn't "look" it to me, if you know what i mean. shannon... she is a beautiful girl, fits the tracy shape perfectly (yes, they pad her to get the right shape. and don't you think she's bound to shed some lbs. doing all that dancing?), speaking of... the girl is one HELL of a dancer. i kid you not, no one can hold a candle to her. she's also acts it brilliantly, and her voice is simply amazing. so powerful, and she takes great care of it, and knows how to sing properly, as opposed to screaming around that stage.

"(and was able to make Scott crack up during Timeless to Me)."
---> Isn't that staged? I saw the tour recently and I thought that part was so funny, but then someone told me that whole scene is staged and scripted that way.
They need to get Keala Settle (Sp?) from the Hairspray tour on Broadway. Her voice was heaven to my hears.

on tour, it is staged. on broadway, it isn't staged. the fact that they play a bit is known and expected.. what they do, however, is not, and it is genuine.

Say what? How does that make sense? The people on Broadway are the same people I saw. I can't imagine it's that different?

the adlibs were started on tour as a schtick with Bruce and was carried over for John Pinnette and became much "officially" scripted when JP wtook over. It started on Broadway when Bruce took over and it has pretty much taken hold here and isn't scripted... they are allowed to play there and aren't punished for it.

But they are on tour....? I'm not talking about the lines, i'm talking about the laughing. As in, he knows he's suppose to laugh there, hence why every review I've read has talk about how the actors has laughed there.

the same applies..
with todd susman, it was a character choice.. him being endeared by Edna. With John Pinnette and Stephen deRosa, it was genuine laughter.. and with Blake Hammond and Stepehan deRosa, it is genuine if they laugh.. it boils down to them knowing how to make the other crack up. With JP Dougherty and Jim j Bullock, it is staged.

The "breaking character" during Timeless to Me, where the actors laugh, is scripted.
However, I remember John Pinette would throw in a line to the audience that would always change and just be hysterical... but the laughing is always the same.

That's what I thought. There's no sense trying to make it come off as if it's not Broadwayguy, I'm not saying it's bad, just saying we know that it's gonna happen.
When they did the talkback after the tour came here to Cleveland, Stephen DeRosa was Wilbur at the time, and someone asked him whether or not he'd broken character, or it was planned (the moment during Timeless To Me), and he admitted that unfortunately it was planned. I THINK (not positive) there was some story about it actually happening one day and they were told to keep it and have ever since...anyone know?
So yeah. Straight from the horse's mouth. There's no way it's just a coincidence that he does the same thing on B'way he did on the tour, that he stated was planned. C'mon now...
He did say something too about how sometimes he'd get thrown new stuff that would genuinely make him laugh, but he told us at the performance that night, that wasn't the case. So...he laughs regardless; sometimes he's really laughing, sometimes he laughs anyways cause it's scripted.

i HAVE seen shows where they havent cracked up... IF they want to adlib, it has a designated spot where the MUSIC and structure of the song allows it. If you know the song, you know the ONLY place that it COULD happen. The only instance where it has been discussed and intentionally staged is with JP Dougherty and Jim J Bullock..
I still disagree. If the talent is there, they can make it work, especially if all they need to do is throw on a fat suit or wear padding. Why do you think they make them? An average theatergoer will probably pay more attention to the overall talent of the performer. I can understand if the person is anorexic looking; it might look odd with a fat suit thrown on. Did anyone see Shoshana? How did she look?
