Just a couple of notes you may be aware of but just in case thought I'd share for all of you who have not made it to Hairspray and want the cheap tickets.
They sometimes have student rush tickets available for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shows for $25. The box office people, at least when I called inquiring about the rush, were very informative and helpful, as my friend and I were planning to go on a Wednesday and I called the Tuesday before and the lady said looking at ticket sales she's pretty sure we could get the tickets to the night show, probably not to the matinee. We got to the city at like 5 and easily got the tickets. The one thing is their student rush tickets are basically in the last row of the mezzanine on the side. But if you're lucky like my friend and I were many rows in the mezzanine were empty so after the 1st song we snuck down to row N(we could have gone farther but were scared). We watched the first act from there and during intermission went down with a handful of people and sat basically in the third row of front mezzanine, dead center and watched the 2nd act. It really ended up being a great deal. If you plan to try that, I'd advise waiting till after the Christmas rush to increase your chances. Hope this helps someone :)
The other thing I wanted to add is I don't know, maybe it's just me, I really did enjoy the show, I thought it was funny and that Carly Jibson was great but I don't know...with all the hype and Tonys I felt I was expecting something a little more. Oh well, it was still very enjoyable, especially at the price I paid, and probably worth seeing.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
