I'm listening to the OBCR of Hallelujah Baby and just curious if anyone saw the original production or even a new production of it.

I don't really understand the plot of it and how it worked?

Anyone out there have any info?

I met Leslie Uggams a few years ago when she was in Millie. Really nice lady and said she had a gr8 time in the Hall.Baby. I just didn't know much about it.

I saw the original production of HALLELUJAH, BABY! with Uggams. I rather liked the show but it was confusing. Although the characters never aged, the era kept changing. If I'm not mistaken it started off on a plantation in the South during the Civil War and ended with a stunning integration ballet in present times. I can't recall too much more because it was so many years ago.

The score was (an is) marvelous.

I saw it too, and i love most of the cast album.
It was one of those "Black" Musicals with an almost completely "White" Creative Team.
Very strange but a lot of it worked.
And Leslie was sensational.

Thanks so much for the info. I agree that the score is wonderful. And I can see that the book might be a bit confusing.

I'll keep listening to it, and hoping for a revival with a new book. :)

It was done recently at George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick NJ.

I frequently use the song the witches sing (is it called "Double, double"?) when I teach MACBETH. I often give a homeworl assignement based on it" What other popular songs could be inserted into a musical version of MACBETH? "Black Magic Woman" always pops up at the top of their lists.
