Posted: 1/30/10 at 10:30pmYou are, of course, assuming that Carol Channing measures time by human standards. I sometimes wonder. The woman has outlasted practically everyone from her youth (except Elaine Stritch who does not age at all because she is a goddess). She's utterly unique and that's her biggest talent.

Happy Birthday, Miss Carol!
I wish you many, many more.
I will never forget coming backstage to meet you when I was 17 years old. It meant so much to me then, and looking back, it means even more to me now. Funny, I ran across the signed program just yesterday.

Carol Channing revealed in her autobiography that she is an octoroon.
So, technically, Pearl Bailey was NOT the first African-American to play Dolly Levi.
Carol was!
Happy birthday, Carol.

Ms. Channing appeared once in a benefit I produced. She was funny and gracious and wonderful.
Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday to the fabulous Carol Channing!!!
When the last tour of "Dolly" came to Pittsburgh, a friend and I were allowed to slip into the opening night party.
I didn't get to speak to her, but she spoke about me.
Appearently she doesn't like to sign autographs anymore, but signs a ton of programs to hand out. Well, at the party they were no where to be found. She and her then husband walk past me, she saying something like "They must be somewhere. These people would like them." She points to me and says, "I'm sure this young man would like one!"
And when the box was found (behind the bar, I think), I was the first person who she handed one to.
Any word on how her broken hip is?
