I predict he'll renew his contract for another series of months and/or take a brief vacation only to return for a long run.
However, if he leaves, congratulations to the next actor who has the opportunity to recreate Edna Turnblad and be part of Broadway history. It's all good.

Harvey is the best Edna. What a shame. The only person I can see fill EDNA'S shoes is Dame Edna.
But it will not be the same without Harvey.

hi everybody, thought I'd weigh in on this post
Without a doubt, Harvey's performance is unrecreatable, but I think (hope? pray??) people will be quite happy to see (as the tour has shown me at least) that HAIRSPRAY plays wonderfully even without Harvey, and we have some wonderful actors ready to 'slip' into the role...
And Phantom2, I'm shocked! You of all people should know how well a role in HAIRSPRAY can be taken on by another actor!

Listen, Harvey is utterly fantastic in the role. But I also saw Bruce Vilanch play Edna and he was terrific. I don't understand all the hang wringing. "Ohhhh, it'll never be the same." Remember, "not being the same" does not mean "worse."

I am always open to new performers and hate when people say that they can't be replaced. Harvey is one exception. The ROLE can be replaced, but no one will play it like Harvey.

Unless you are referring to your new icon. In that case, different is worse.
But I have no dount in my mind that others will play Edna and do an amazing job. Will they be Harvey, of course not. Harvey is Harvey. But they will make the part their own...

The best thing about Hairspray is that it's NOT a celebrity driven vehicle or show. It's a show that doesn't require a star. It only requires a great cast to bring justice to the great material.
Harvey was a huge part of putting HAIRSPRAY on the map, but now that's it's there, it ain't goin' nowhere! Marissa, Laura Bell, Kerry, Corey, Matt and Clarke who all rocked are gone and guess what? The show still rocks. That speaks loud and clear about the material, not to mention Jack O'Brien's uncanny wisdom when it comes to creating and maintaining a hit show.
Marc Shaiman, I'd like to add to your point about the National Tour. That tour is on fire. It's an amazing night at the theatre. And guess what? Harvey Fierstein isn't in it. The show will go on and on and on and yes, even though no one can replace Harvey Fierstein, another KILLER actor WILL recreate Edna Turnblad.
Sorry to see Harvey leave. Happy to see another actor have a fantastic opportunity. That's something GREAT.

HAIRSPRAY is joy to behold either on Broadway or on the road with the crackerjack Tour, with a role like Edna special care will be taken to get just the right "fit" for her dresses and I have no doubt whoever is cast will fit like a glove. I remember the handwringing when Bruce was cast, well he's sublime, different than Harvey and all the better because of it! Unlike The Producers which took a slight tumble because the wrong choices were made the first time NL and MB left, the creative forces of HAIRSPRAY have already proven they know the importance of the right alchemey to keep the "BEAT" going! Here's to that lucky actor, whoever and wherever he is!

I have to say I am thrilled that Mr. Shaiman posted here. He proves once again his love and respect for Broadway fans. As much as I adore Harvey,I am sure the creative team will pick another dynamite performer to continue thrilling audiences every night as Edna !
And on a personal note, Mr Shaiman, if you read this, i would like to Thank you and Mr. Wittman for one of the best experiences I ever had in a theater. I can't wait for your next project. I am sure it will be an incentive strong enough to make me come all the way from Greece to NYC to enjoy it ! Bless you !

I'm upset that Harvey is leaving because he is wonderful at the role, but I don't think the show is over if he leaves. I mean there is always a little fear that what happened to the producers will happen but I don't think so. If and when Harvey leaves I still plan on going to see the show as often as I do now.
Harvey is an amazing part of the shows charm, but so was Marissa, Matt, Clark, Kerry, Cory..... and the show still lives without them. In an amazing way may I add. So it will be said to see him exit but it will also be interesting to see the show have a new input into it.
I am also kind of hoping to see John Goodman in the role.

alrigh guys my mom Loves Harvey in the show and her Birthday is coming up soon. She would Love to be there for his last show if this is it so how long do you think I should wait to see if it really is his last performance? I don't want to have what happend to all the Sutton fan's happen to me where I go buy them and then he extands. I would see it again and again but my mom wuold get really pissed at me for spending all my money on the shwo. Not that it would be anydifferent then now but still I don't really need that speach again anytimes soon. SO what do you guys think?

On a side note, I felt a similar way when Louise Pitre and Tina Maddigan left Mamma Mia! after 2 solid years on Broadway. However, Clive Barnes just caught Mamma Mia! recently and said, "The show is still in pristine shape, it hasn't lost a thing." Again, IN MY HEART they were both very special and always will be. Do I think it's still a spectacular production, most definitely!
Some people touch our hearts in a way that can't really be explained. Harvey Fierstein is one of those people in my heart.
