1993 - I did that with all four musicals: Kiss of the Spider Woman Blood Brothers The Goodbye Girl The Who's Tommy
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
It doesn't say anything bad about the nominated shows.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

I think the show is only part of it. Sometimes tickets are on TKTS or TDF simply because the show is in too big of a theater.
In the case of 1993, none of those shows were in the current fashion of the "spectacle" (Cats, Les Miz, Lion King, etc).
Blood Brothers was a small imported show about class warfare. I liked it and saw it two or three times using discounted tickets but I don't think people wanted to shell out $$ for such a simple musical. "Kiss" and "Goodbye Girl" had Broadway stars and should have sold better. I think audiences were a bit skittish about "Kiss" because it is a dark show. Who wants to see a show about a South American prison? With "Goodbye Girl" even Bernadette and Martin Short couldn't save it. It was rather tedious and some of the choreography was amateurish. As for "Tommy" it really has a niche audience. It didn't attract the blue hair crowd who have been a mainstay of Broadway.

I'd be really surprised to see CRY-BABY recoup. I'd love to XANADU recoup though...
"You will understand that Bww is a forum that allows Theatre people, Fussy old Queens, and chorus boys of Mama Mia to release their everyday life's frustration by being Snarky, B**chy, and sarcastic."

Hard to tell who and who will not till after a visit from Tony
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
I think by the time they win (IF they win) the Tony, the show has probably closed, don't you think...? With as much as I think Xanadu is overrated, it might surprise us all and continue to bring in revenue! =I
Per Variety, "“Xanadu” has grossed some $11.8 million since it began perfs at the Helen Hayes in May [2007]."
If Xanadu hasn't recouped with that figure, I'd be surprised. I don't know if that figure takes into account the amount paid for the Korean rights to the show or not.
